International Mother Language Day (IMLD) is an annual observance held on February 21 to promote awareness of linguistic and cultaas the first proclaimed by the – General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO) – on 17th November, 1999… The recognition of this day was inspired by the events of 1952 – when students in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) protested against the government’s decision to make Urdu the only official Language of the state.

The purpose of International Mother Language Day is to promote the preservation of all the world’s languages, which are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. Each language offers distinct perspectives on the world, and its disappearance can mean the loss of valuable cultural knowledge, traditions, and values.

International Mother Language Day encourages individuals and communities to take part in activities and events to promote the awareness and preservation of their mother language and other languages spoken in their area. Events can include language classes, poetry readings, film screenings, and other activities. Additionally, it is an opportunity to celebrate the linguistic and cultural diversity of the world & to promote the use of multiple languages in official settings.

International Mother Language Day is an opportunity to highlight the importance of language & its role in the preservation of cultural heritage. It is also a reminder to appreciate the various Cultures & Languages that coexist in the world & to respect the right of individuals to use and preserve their own language.
