US President Donald Trump has shared a map on social media depicting several countries—including Iceland and its neighbors—covered by the US flag. In protest, the Icelandic government summoned the US Ambassador, Billy Long, on Monday. Reuters reported this development.
The map, posted on ‘Truth Social’ without any explanation, shows Iceland, Greenland, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean region overlaid with the US flag, effectively portraying the entire territory as the “United States of America.” Following this, Iceland’s Foreign Minister, Þorgerður Gunnarsdóttir, summoned the US Ambassador and delivered a stern message, describing the post as “completely inappropriate.”
Tensions were already running high in the region due to Trump’s recent interest in purchasing Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory. Trump released this controversial map just hours after the European Union announced a significant investment in Greenland. In response, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated clearly that the people of Greenland have absolutely no desire to become American.
