Israel’s decision to launch a fresh attack on Iran could have long-term repercussions for its relationship with the United States. Israeli analyst Ori Goldberg suggested as much in an interview with Al Jazeera.
Goldberg noted that Israel disregarded US President Donald Trump’s call for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to refrain from retaliating against the Iranian attack. Consequently, relations between the two nations have become strained.
Just days before Trump urged against a retaliatory strike on Iran, he and Netanyahu had engaged in a heated phone call. During that conversation, Trump expressed anger over Netanyahu’s plans to conduct further airstrikes in Beirut, Lebanon. News of the call initially leaked to the media, and Trump later confirmed the details himself.
Highlighting the differences between the leadership styles of Joe Biden and Trump, Goldberg remarked that actions Netanyahu could have gotten away with during Biden’s presidency would be far more difficult to execute under Trump.
Goldberg added that Israel is not in a position to engage in a full-scale conflict without US support.
The Israeli analyst believes that Israel is currently so vulnerable—both internationally and domestically—that it lacks the capacity to launch a major military offensive on its own.
