Gun Violence During Halloween in the U.S.: 118 Casualties

At least 24 people have been killed and 94 others injured in a series of shootings across the United States during Halloween celebrations. The incidents occurred on the night of October 31 in various states, ranging from California to Delaware. The attacks took place in locations including nightclubs, clothing stores, areas outside stadiums, and near university campuses.

This information was reported by The New York Times, citing statements from police and local authorities.

One of the deadliest incidents occurred in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas, Texas. In the early hours of November 1, three separate shootings took place there within a span of approximately 75 minutes, resulting in at least four deaths and 15 injuries. Authorities have not yet determined whether there is any connection between these attacks. There are concerns that the number of casualties could rise further.

Halloween is a popular holiday in the U.S., during which many people dress in elaborate costumes and engage in night-long festivities. These celebrations are sometimes accompanied by alcohol and drug consumption. According to experts, the combination of these factors and the easy availability of firearms increases the risk of violence. It remains unclear whether the level of violence during this year’s Halloween is higher than in recent years; however, previous studies have indicated a trend toward increased violence on Halloween.

James Alan Fox, a criminologist at Northeastern University, analyzed FBI crime data from Boston between 2005 and 2009 and found that October 31 ranks as the third most violent day of the year—surpassed only by July 4 and January 1. He also noted that the day is particularly risky for minors.

In an interview on Sunday, Fox remarked, “They are out in the evening, interacting with strangers.”

Children and Young People Also Targeted

In Detroit, a five-year-old child wearing a Halloween costume was struck by gunfire. After returning home from a night of trick-or-treating, a child was playing in a back room of the house when they were struck in the chest by a bullet. This information was shared by Detroit Police Department Deputy Chief Arnold Williams during a press conference.

He stated that the child told their mother, “I think I’ve been shot.” The child is currently in stable condition.

In Jacksonville, Florida, 13 people were shot across two separate incidents, resulting in two deaths. Around 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, a 17-year-old girl was shot and killed while waiting in line to enter a Halloween party. The Jacksonville Police Department noted that she, along with two others injured in the same incident, were not the intended targets of the shooter.

Elsewhere in the city, around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday, a house party involving over a hundred people spilled out onto the street, where a shooting left 10 people injured. Among them, a 20-year-old man was killed. A 15-year-old girl who was injured remains in stable condition, while another person is in critical condition.

A shooting also occurred at a nightclub in Jackson, Mississippi, leaving two people dead and four others injured.

In Northern California, a pregnant mother of four was shot and killed by an assailant at a clothing store. Six others were injured in the incident, with two teenagers among those in critical condition.

In Oklahoma City, police responded to reports of a disturbance at a Halloween party in a trailer park. During the incident, a man was shot multiple times in the legs; police expect him to survive. Two other individuals at the scene were killed after being struck by a vehicle, though the Oklahoma City Police Department stated that the exact circumstances of these deaths remain unclear.

Shootings in University Areas

More than 24 people were shot in incidents occurring near university campuses or at university-organized events during the Halloween celebrations. In Birmingham, Alabama, one person was killed and eight others were injured in a shooting outside Legion Field Stadium. Earlier that day, the stadium had hosted a highly anticipated football match between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University—an event known as the “Magic City Classic” that drew large crowds.

In Bloomington, Illinois, police officers responded to a shooting near the Illinois Wesleyan University campus, where eight people were found injured. A 19-year-old woman died at the scene, while the other seven were transported to local hospitals. The Bloomington Police Department reported that one of the victims is in critical condition.

Meanwhile, as police in Illinois were responding to that incident, officers in Bloomington, Indiana—located about 200 miles to the southeast—heard gunfire near the Indiana University campus. The area was hosting both Halloween celebrations and the university’s homecoming festivities. In a statement, police reported that multiple individuals were found suffering from gunshot wounds in the city’s downtown area.

Seven people were taken to local hospitals following this incident. Police officers apprehended an individual who was fleeing the scene while openly carrying a firearm; however, authorities have not yet confirmed whether this person was the one who opened fire.

Experts: Preventing such violence is difficult

Experts who study gun violence note that while the risk of violence increases during Halloween, preventing such incidents remains a significant challenge.

Alexis Piquero, a criminologist at the University of Miami and former director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics at the U.S. Department of Justice during the Biden administration, stated, “The police cannot be inside every bar, nor can they be in every parking lot.”

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Como has expressed concern over a series of attacks in the Deep Ellum area of Dallas. During a press conference on Sunday, he stated that police personnel had been properly deployed throughout Saturday night and for the Halloween holiday.

Images and videos circulating on social media show people in the streets of Deep Ellum running in search of safety. The area is home to numerous bars, restaurants, and concert venues. A recent rise in criminal activity has sparked concerns regarding security in the neighborhood. This year, at least seven bars and restaurants—including several long-standing establishments—have closed down.

By Sunday morning, parts of the area had been cleared due to police cordons, with festive debris left scattered across the streets. Dallas Police Chief Como remarked, “This is completely unacceptable.”
