Curaçao made history in their debut FIFA World Cup appearance. By holding Ecuador to a draw, the island nation secured a point in their very first World Cup match. The game at Arrowhead Stadium ended in a goalless stalemate, with Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room emerging as the hero. Standing like the Great Wall of China, he thwarted Ecuador’s attacking line. Ecuador took 28 shots throughout the match, with 15 on target, but Room stood as a barrier against every attack. This set a record for the most saves by a goalkeeper in a World Cup match (excluding extra time) since 1966.
Curaçao is the smallest nation by population to ever play in the World Cup. They had begun the tournament like a nightmare, suffering a crushing 7-1 defeat against Germany in their debut. However, they erased that memory by making history against Ecuador.
Ecuadorian supporters outnumbered the opposition in the stands, with their yellow jerseys filling the entire stadium. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands were also present in the stands to support and cheer for the Curaçao team.
Curaçao is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Of the team’s 26-man squad, 25 were born in the Netherlands, and most play in Dutch football leagues. The team is managed by experienced Dutch coach Dick Advocaat.
Former West Ham forward Enner Valencia had a great chance as early as the third minute, but Room’s alertness ensured the ball went wide of the post. On the counter-attack, Curaçao’s Sherel Floranus missed the target with his shot. Valencia later failed to score from close range, and an attempt by Jordy Alcívar also proved unsuccessful.
Ecuador dominated possession in the first half, controlling the ball for approximately 65 percent of the time. However, they failed to convert that dominance into a goal. Room denied a header from Gonzalo Plata, and subsequently, Curaçao created several chances of their own. As the match progressed, Ecuador—ranked more than 50 places higher—grew increasingly desperate for a goal. Towards the end, a cross from substitute Angelo Preciado struck the top of the crossbar and went out of play. As the final whistle blew, Curaçao players swarmed Room in celebration, rejoicing over securing an unforgettable point.
Meanwhile, in another match in Toronto, four-time world champions Germany came from behind to defeat Ivory Coast 2–1, securing their place in the Round of 32. Thanks to Curaçao’s draw, Germany remains at the top of the group. Germany is set to face Ecuador next Thursday, while Curaçao will take on Ivory Coast.
