A major fire has broken out at a large fuel storage depot near the city of Sulaimaniyah in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq. At least 20 people were injured in the incident and dozens of fuel tankers were destroyed in the fire. The fire broke out in the warehouse in Tanjaro area just before midnight on Monday. It is one of the major fuel supply hubs of the province. Al Jazeera reported this.
Sulaimaniyah Deputy Director General Harsh Saeed Salim told local media that there were no casualties in the fire, but around 20 people were slightly injured. As the fire spread, several explosions occurred in the facility. On receiving the information, emergency rescue teams and members of the security forces immediately reached the spot and started the work of controlling the fire.
According to local sources, 34 petrol tankers and 4 gas-oil tankers were completely gutted in this fire and more than 3 million liters of fuel were burnt to ashes. Sulaimaniyah Deputy Governor Shaho Osman confirmed that the fire has now been fully brought under control. However, the exact cause of the fire is still unclear. Authorities are yet to release a full picture of the damage.
