An open trade war has erupted between the United States and Canada following the collapse of trade negotiations. After the Trump administration imposed a new 50% tariff, US President Donald Trump took to social media to express his frustration, remarking, “Canada wants to enjoy all the benefits of being a US state without actually being one.”
Trump alleged that US farmers have had to pay exorbitant tariffs for years to access the Canadian market. In response, immediately after talks broke down on Friday, Washington implemented an additional 50% tariff on Canadian goods worth approximately $20 billion. This measure covers a range of products, including dairy, alcohol, cement, clothing, and hockey equipment.
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has termed this move a “major miscalculation” by the United States. He stated unequivocally that Canada is now engaged in a direct trade war with Washington. In retaliation for the US move, proportionate counter-tariffs will be imposed on American goods starting September 8. Ottawa was compelled to call off the talks because Washington was imposing unfair and unreasonable conditions. Canadian opposition parties and provincial leaders have also strongly backed Prime Minister Carney’s firm stance against Trump’s actions.
