The body of Pakistani mountaineer Dr. Asma Mushtaq was transported by helicopter from Spantik Base Camp to Skardu on Monday. She passed away on August 20 after suffering from severe altitude-related health complications while descending Spantik Peak (7,027 meters) in the Karakoram range. Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, announced this information in a statement.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Tarar said that following an extremely difficult rescue operation, Dr. Asma Mushtaq’s body had been safely brought from Spantik Base Camp to Skardu.
He stated that the body would be transported to Lahore on the next available flight, weather permitting. Tarar expressed deep gratitude to the FCNA, the Arandu Volunteer Rescue Team, and everyone involved in the operation for their assistance. Earlier, on September 2, Tarar had announced that the Arandu Volunteer Rescue Team had safely brought Asma’s body to the Spantik Peak Base Camp. The recovery operation had become prolonged and extremely challenging due to adverse weather conditions at high altitude.
Previously, the recovery operation was temporarily suspended after the rescue team was forced to turn back while heading towards Camp 3 due to heavy snowfall and strong winds. Later, as weather conditions improved, the rescue team set out again from the base camp and advanced towards Camp 2. Asma Mushtaq died on August 20 after suffering from severe altitude-related health complications while descending Spantik Peak (7,027 meters) in the Karakoram range.
