The German government has alleged Russian involvement in an attempt to attack Leipzig/Halle Airport—a key regional airport in Germany—using an explosive-laden drone. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that this incident is part of Russia’s ongoing “hybrid operations” in Europe.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday alongside Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Dobrindt said that police investigations, the nature of the crime, and intelligence data collectively provided sufficient grounds to hold Russia responsible for the attempted attack. Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera reported this, citing the news agency Reuters.
On the evening of August 4, a drone was detected at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany. The drone was positioned near a Ukrainian aircraft. It was subsequently neutralized after explosives were confirmed to be on board.
The German Interior Minister stated that authorities do not view this as an isolated incident. In his words, it aligns with Russia’s broader “hybrid operations” across Europe.
Amidst Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, several European nations supporting Ukraine have reported a recent rise in acts of sabotage and attempted attacks. These countries have also alleged Russian involvement in these incidents.
Diplomatic Measures Against Russia
Germany has announced several diplomatic measures against Russia in response to the attempted attack. Foreign Minister Wadephul stated that the Russian ambassador has been summoned over the matter.
He further announced decisions to close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the “Russian House” cultural center in Berlin.
Initiatives will also be taken within the European Union (EU) framework to impose further sanctions on Russia and travel restrictions on Russian citizens. Additionally, the German Foreign Minister mentioned plans to increase pressure on Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.”
Moscow’s Counter-Warning
In response to Berlin’s allegations, Russia stated that it would retaliate against Germany’s “anti-Russian measures.” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow would respond to Berlin’s actions; this information was reported by the Russian news agency Interfax.
Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed support for Germany, stating that Europe stands united against Russian aggression. In a social media post, she affirmed that the European Union would counter those seeking to threaten its freedom and security.
She further announced that the European Union is preparing to impose additional sanctions against Russia.
