First Democratic Senator Elected in Kansas in 100 Years

For the first time in nearly a century, a Democratic Party candidate, Adam Hamilton, has been elected as a senator from the U.S. state of Kansas. He secured this victory by defeating the incumbent Republican senator, Roger Marshall, according to projections by the Associated Press (AP).

The outcome of this closely contested race between Hamilton and Marshall has surprised political analysts, given the long-standing dominance of the Republican Party in Kansas. The last time a Democrat was elected as a senator from the state was in 1932.

Hamilton—who founded one of the largest United Methodist churches in the United States—emphasized his religious background during his campaign, while also highlighting key Democratic policy positions, such as reducing the cost of living. Like many other rural states, Kansas has seen its agricultural and transportation sectors suffer due to record-high prices for diesel and fuel.

On Monday, Hamilton remarked, “We are often told that we shouldn’t talk about politics or religion. But this time, we are fighting to protect our democracy. The next two years will be a critical period for the nation.”

Meanwhile, Roger Marshall is a staunch supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who also campaigned on his behalf.

During his campaign, Marshall pledged to implement Trump’s political agenda, while also promising to expand healthcare in rural areas and protect the interests of farmers. However, his promises were met with skepticism, given his previous vote in favor of cutting funding for rural healthcare.

Marshall, a physician by profession, supports Trump’s “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) initiative—a policy that critics argue could be detrimental to public health. He also faced controversy for opposing mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, Marshall faced pressure during his election campaign following a New York Times report revealing that, during his time as a physician, he had filed lawsuits against nearly 700 former patients to recover unpaid medical bills. Hamilton’s campaign team highlighted this issue in their efforts against their opponent.

According to an Associated Press report, approximately $110 million was spent on this election, making it the most expensive in the history of Kansas.
