Democratic candidate Annie Andrews has made history in the South Carolina Senate election by reclaiming a seat that had been held by the Republicans for three decades. Celebrating her unexpected victory, Andrews remarked that the people have shown what is possible.
“I think we have just made history,” she said. In an upset, she defeated incumbent Senator Darlene Graham, shifting a seat that had been under Republican control for nearly thirty years into Democratic hands. She will become the first woman from South Carolina to be elected to the U.S. Senate. Andrews took the stage to celebrate her victory accompanied by Dolly Parton’s hit song “9 to 5,” greeted by enthusiastic supporters who cheered, chanted, and held up placards.
