Iran-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen have claimed responsibility for an attack on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura oil refinery. On Tuesday (October 27), the group stated that a ballistic missile strike had ignited a fire at the facility.
However, Saudi authorities have not confirmed the attack. Yahya Saree, the military spokesperson for the Houthis, announced the strike in a statement.
According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Ras Tanura—located on the coast of the Persian Gulf, west of the Strait of Hormuz—is Saudi Arabia’s largest oil refinery.
Almost all of Saudi Arabia’s oil exports are shipped through two primary ports: Ras Tanura on the Persian Gulf coast and Yanbu on the Red Sea coast. The Houthis have targeted both of these ports in the past.
Meanwhile, citing a source familiar with the matter, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia has brought a fire that broke out near the Ras Tanura oil terminal earlier in the day under control.
Nevertheless, it has not been independently verified whether the fire was the result of the missile attack claimed by the Houthis.
