US President Donald Trump reiterated that Iran would never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. Following this statement, he received brief applause from the leaders present at the UN General Assembly session.
Addressing Iran, Trump said, “They used to act like a bully in the Middle East. But now, they can no longer engage in that bullying.”
Urging nations worldwide to completely isolate Iran economically, Trump said, “I call upon all countries to join us and enforce comprehensive economic sanctions against Iran.”
World leaders are concerned about the ongoing six-month standoff between the US and Iran, Iran’s increasingly assertive stance, and the rising instability across the region. It has also been noted that the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program remains, despite various claims made by Trump regarding the issue.
As Trump delivered his speech, dozens of protesters opposed to the Iranian government gathered outside the UN headquarters. Some carried placards demanding freedom and democracy, while also condemning the authoritarian rule in Iran.
