Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has accused the United Nations of failing to fulfill its responsibility to free the world from war. He made these remarks at the very beginning of his address during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
Lula da Silva said, “Since first speaking from this podium in 2003, I am now opening the general debate of this session for the tenth time. Undoubtedly, this is the most critical period for the United Nations. And the emotion driving me today is indignation.”
Addressing the delegates present, he stated, “The United Nations is failing to discharge one of its most vital responsibilities—that of freeing humanity from the scourge of war.”
