The Italian government has initiated a move to limit the number of foreign students in schools through legislation. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also announced plans to ban burqas and hijabs in educational institutions.
Meloni revealed these plans on Sunday while addressing ‘Phoenix,’ a national youth festival organized by the youth wing of the ruling Brothers of Italy (FdI) party.
She stated that a situation where Italian students feel like a minority in their own country’s classrooms cannot be allowed to develop. In her view, it is unacceptable for local students to feel marginalized or become a minority rather than the majority within an Italian classroom.
Meloni also outlined a strict stance regarding religious attire in schools, stating that her government would ban burqas and hijabs in educational institutions.
She further mentioned plans to impose new conditions for integrating foreign students into the Italian education system. Parents of foreign students struggling to integrate into the school system might be required to learn the Italian language.
Meloni indicated that the proposed measures would soon be submitted to the Council of Ministers for approval.
