Police have recovered the mutilated body of yet another woman in the eastern region of Johannesburg, South Africa. This brings the total number of women’s bodies recovered from the same area over the past two months to nine. There are growing fears that a serial killer or a specific criminal gang may be behind this string of murders. News agency AP reported this on Thursday, citing local authorities.
Provincial Police Commissioner Fred Kekana stated that the unidentified woman’s body was found near a building under construction in the Dawn Park area of the Ekurhuleni municipality. The woman, estimated to be around 30 years old, bore stab wounds and had her throat slit. Noting similarities with the eight bodies recovered previously, the police have urged the public to remain vigilant. This series of killings has sparked widespread fear and outrage across the country.
Police have warned the public against spreading photos of the bodies on social media, as doing so creates panic. Meanwhile, organizations dedicated to missing persons have urged families to report any missing relatives to the police immediately without delay. Outraged by the successive killings of women, various women’s rights groups and civil society organizations have organized protests and prayer meetings, demanding immediate and stringent measures to ensure the safety of women and children.
