Amidst the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, Washington has approved the potential sale of bombs, guidance kits, and related equipment worth $5 billion to Saudi Arabia. This information was reported online by the news agency AFP on Saturday (September 5).
On Friday, the US State Department stated that the proposed arms sale aims to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s air defense and internal security capabilities. It also seeks to enhance the country’s ability to counter current and future regional threats and improve coordination with US forces and other Gulf partners.
Additionally, the State Department noted that by bolstering Saudi Arabia’s security, this package would support the realization of Washington’s foreign policy and national security objectives. The department designated Saudi Arabia as a Major Non-NATO Ally.
The report states that the proposed US arms package includes thousands of guidance kits and bombs, alongside fuses, target detectors, various containers, support equipment, spare parts, and technical assistance.
The US State Department has notified Congress about the proposed arms sale. However, final approval from US lawmakers is required to complete the transaction.
In other words, Friday’s approval does not constitute a finalized arms deal; rather, it is a step in the process of a potential arms transfer to Saudi Arabia.
Since the US and Israel began military operations against Iran earlier this year, Saudi Arabia has been targeted by drone and missile attacks from Iranian forces and Tehran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
