Today, Tuesday, John Ternus will officially assume the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the tech giant Apple. This marks the end of Tim Cook’s successful 15-year tenure. Apple currently holds the top spot in the global smartphone market. Ternus takes on this role amidst significant challenges, including lagging behind competitors in artificial intelligence (AI) technology and a heavy reliance on China for manufacturing. Fifty-one-year-old John Ternus joined Apple’s design team in 2001; leveraging his experience in mechanical engineering, he subsequently rose to the position of Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. He has long worked behind the scenes on the company’s core products—including the iPhone, which generates the majority of the company’s revenue. In a message to employees, outgoing CEO Tim Cook expressed full confidence in Ternus, stating that few people understand what it takes to create world-changing products as well as John does. Although stepping down as CEO, Tim Cook will serve as the Executive Chairman of the Apple Board and oversee relationships with global policymakers.
Just eight days after taking office, Ternus will face Apple’s annual iPhone unveiling event on September 9. There is a possibility that the company’s first-ever foldable iPhone could be revealed at this event. However, analysts believe that navigating global geopolitics—alongside hardware innovation—will be the true test for Ternus. In particular, the new leadership’s primary challenge will be skillfully managing the political and tariff-related pressures from US President Donald Trump regarding domestic production, all while maintaining the company’s reliance on China.
