A powerful earthquake has shaken various parts of Colombia. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported the magnitude at 7.4, according to a Reuters report.
According to the USGS, the earthquake struck at 7:34 AM local time on Monday (August 10). Its epicenter was located approximately 5 kilometers east of the town of San José del Palmar in the Chocó department. The earthquake originated at a depth of about 107 kilometers below the surface.
Meanwhile, the US tsunami warning system estimated the magnitude at 7.1. However, no tsunami warning was issued following the quake. Preliminary reports indicate that the strong tremors were felt across various regions of Colombia as well as in areas bordering Venezuela.
Nubia Carolina Córdoba-Curi, the Governor of Chocó department, stated that several people were injured in Quibdó, the departmental capital, due to the earthquake. Several permanent structures in the city also sustained damage.
The Governor noted that relevant authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage. Residents have also been advised to remain alert for potential aftershocks.
Colombia is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in South America. Due to its location near the junction of multiple tectonic plates and active fault lines, the country frequently experiences earthquakes. According to the Colombian Geological Survey, over a hundred major, destructive earthquakes have been recorded in the country to date.
The country’s Andean region, the eastern foothills of the Eastern Cordillera, and the Pacific coastal areas are known to be particularly susceptible to earthquakes.
Colombia has suffered extensive damage from major earthquakes in the past as well. In 1979, a powerful earthquake measuring 8.0 on the magnitude scale struck near the southwestern city of Tumaco.
