Argentina national team defender Facundo Medina encountered a humorous situation stemming from that very frustration. A garage owner, failing to recognize him, bluntly accused the Argentine players of intentionally letting Spain win the World Cup final.
According to a report by the Argentine media outlet TyC Sports, Medina recently visited a car garage. The owner served him mate (a traditional South American drink), but upon noticing the three stars of the national team engraved on the cup Medina was holding, he began criticizing the players.
The garage owner was unaware that the person sitting before him—listening to all this criticism about the national team—was actually national team defender Medina himself. Medina did not reveal his identity; instead, he encouraged the man to keep talking, finding the situation amusing. The Argentine defender listened to his grievances for nearly an hour.
Recounting the experience later, Medina said he had asked the man to elaborate. The garage owner insisted, “We gave it away. We threw the match away.”
However, the real surprise came a short while later. A woman emerging from a nearby bakery recognized Medina and informed the garage owner’s associate. She was so astonished to see Medina that she was practically left speechless.
Medina recalled seeing the woman step aside and begin to weep, wondering to herself, “How could he be here?” To ease the situation, Medina approached her himself. He reassured her, saying, “Don’t cry now. We didn’t give anything away; we wanted to win.” The two then shared an embrace.
