Marius Borg Høiby (29), son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has been convicted in two rape cases. On Monday (June 15), the Oslo District Court sentenced him to four years in prison. However, he was acquitted of two other rape charges. This report comes from the BBC. A three-judge bench in Courtroom 250 of the Oslo District Court stated in its 128-page verdict that, in addition to the two rape charges, Høiby was found guilty of several other offenses. Høiby was not present in court during the verdict due to illness but joined via video link. Prosecutors had previously sought a prison sentence of seven years and seven months, while his lawyers requested a term of less than 18 months.

The BBC notes that although Høiby is not an official member of the Norwegian royal family, this trial has had a significant impact on the family. He was four years old when his mother married Crown Prince Haakon and subsequently grew up within the royal household. The Norwegian royal family stated they would not comment on Monday’s verdict. Meanwhile, Crown Princess Mette-Marit is critically ill with pulmonary fibrosis and has recently been placed on a waiting list for a lung transplant. Citing his mother’s health condition, Høiby’s lawyers had previously applied for his release on several occasions so he could spend time with her.

Following the verdict, Høiby’s lawyer, Petar Sekulic, once again applied for his release. Although the court had approved his release last week, the Supreme Court of Norway subsequently overturned that decision. The court’s verdict established that Høiby was guilty of raping a woman at the Crown Prince’s estate in Skaugum in 2018 and another woman in Oslo in 2024. According to the judges, both women were asleep and unable to resist at the time of the incidents. However, Høiby was acquitted of rape charges involving a woman he knew at an Oslo hotel in November 2024 and another woman in the Lofoten archipelago in 2023.

Additionally, Høiby was convicted of abusing his ex-girlfriend, the Norwegian influencer Nora Haukland. Charges of severe physical abuse against another woman living in Oslo’s upscale Frogner district in August 2024 were also proven; this woman became known in the media as the “Frogner woman.” The trial involved allegations concerning a total of six women. Only one of the complainants was present in court when the verdict was announced. The BBC reported that Høiby was seen weeping after being convicted of rape. In all four rape cases, it was alleged that the complainants were either asleep or unconscious. The verdict ordered the payment of a total of 640,000 Norwegian kroner (approximately £50,000 or €57,000) in compensation to four of the women.

Nora Haukland is the only woman among them whose name the judges permitted to be disclosed. Meanwhile, Høiby had previously admitted to less serious charges, such as possessing 3.5 kg of cannabis and committing several traffic offenses. His lawyers will now decide whether to appeal the four-year sentence. In a statement, the Norwegian Royal Family said the matter has been resolved in court and they have no comment on the verdict.
