Nearly three-quarters of US citizens have expressed concern that artificial intelligence (AI) technology could pose a threat to humanity’s existence in the future. This information was revealed in a survey conducted by Quinnipiac University.

Among the American adults surveyed, 73% stated they were concerned about the potential threats posed by AI. Of these, 38% described themselves as “very concerned,” while 35% said they were “somewhat concerned.” Conversely, 25% of respondents said they were not concerned about the issue.

The survey also found widespread support for regulating AI. Eighty-six percent of Americans believe that AI companies should be required to meet independent safety standards, even if doing so slows down the technology’s development.

Meanwhile, there is a lack of public trust in the top executives of AI companies. Seventy-four percent of respondents indicated they had “little or no confidence” in the leaders of AI firms.

Fifty-three percent of Americans expressed the view that AI would do more harm than good in daily life.

Quinnipiac University conducted this nationwide survey between September 24 and 27, involving 1,202 American adults. The survey results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
