At least 30 people have been killed in an attack by armed gunmen on a village in Nigeria’s northwestern Kaduna state.
The casualties occurred early Monday morning when gunmen entered the village and opened fire indiscriminately.
News agency Reuters reported these details, citing local residents.
The secretary to a village chief named Dogon Rana stated that the gunmen suddenly entered the area, opened fire indiscriminately, and set houses ablaze. At least eight children are among the dead, and four others have sustained serious injuries.
A local youth leader named Ishaya Dawa said the attackers struck Naridon village in the Kauru area around midnight. They fired indiscriminately at residents; some victims were brutally slaughtered. The deceased include women, children, and the elderly. Before fleeing, the attackers set fire to several homes in the village. Some bodies have already been sent to the morgue.
The resident added that law enforcement personnel arrived at the scene hours later, in the morning.
Mansur Hassan, the spokesperson for the Kaduna State Police, stated that detailed information regarding the attack would be released soon.
While armed groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP are active in northeastern Nigeria, no group has yet claimed responsibility for this attack in Kaduna state.
Recent violence by armed gangs and criminal syndicates has created a severe security crisis in northwestern and north-central Nigeria, where deadly attacks on civilians in various communities occur frequently.
