24 Killed in Gun Violence Surrounding Halloween Celebrations in the US

Gun violence and acts of violence have occurred across several US states in connection with Halloween celebrations, leaving at least 24 people dead and another 94 injured. These incidents took place in various locations—ranging from California to Delaware—including nightclubs, clothing stores, stadiums, and areas near university campuses.

According to a report by The New York Times, multiple shootings occurred across the country between October 31 and November 1. This casualty count is based on information from The New York Times, NBC, and the Associated Press, as well as statements from law enforcement.

In one instance, four people were killed and 15 others injured in three separate shootings early Sunday morning in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas, Texas.

Deep Ellum is one of Dallas’s most popular entertainment districts, home to numerous bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and music venues. A large crowd had gathered in the area on Saturday night for Halloween festivities.

According to the Dallas Police Department, the first shooting occurred at 12:20 a.m. in the 2600 block of Elm Street; the second at 1:05 a.m. in the 2600 block of Main Street; and the third at 1:35 a.m. in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street.

A total of 19 people were struck by gunfire across these three incidents, four of whom died. Some of the 15 injured individuals were transported to hospitals by emergency medical personnel, while others arrived at hospitals on their own.

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Cuomo stated that extra security measures had been implemented in anticipation of Halloween, which allowed officers stationed nearby to respond rapidly when the shootings were reported. An investigation is underway to identify those responsible for the attacks.

Fatalities also reported in Florida and Mississippi

In Jacksonville, Florida, at least 13 people were struck by gunfire in two separate shooting incidents. Two people have been killed among those involved. Jacksonville police stated that some of the injured were struck by gunfire unintentionally.

In another part of the city, a shooting occurred around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday when a party involving over a hundred people spilled out onto the street. Ten people were shot; a 20-year-old man was killed. A 15-year-old girl who was injured remains in stable condition, while another person is in critical condition.

Meanwhile, in Jackson, Mississippi, two people were killed and four others injured in a shooting at a nightclub.

A shooting also took place at a clothing store in Northern California, resulting in the death of a pregnant woman—a mother of four—and injuries to six others. Two teenagers among the injured are in critical condition.

In Oklahoma City, police responded to reports of a disturbance during a Halloween party at a trailer park. One man was shot multiple times in the legs; police believe he is likely to survive. Additionally, two people were killed after being struck by a vehicle at the scene, though the exact circumstances of their deaths remain unclear.

Shootings near university areas and stadiums

Several shootings occurred in the vicinity of university campuses and educational institution events during the Halloween celebrations, leaving more than two dozen people wounded by gunfire.

In Birmingham, Alabama, one person was killed and eight others were injured in a shooting outside Legion Field Stadium. Earlier, the stadium had hosted a highly anticipated football match—known as the “Magic City Classic”—between Alabama A&M and Alabama State.

Separately, in Bloomington, Illinois, police officers assisted eight people who had been shot near the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University. A 19-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The seven other injured individuals were transported to local hospitals, with one reported to be in critical condition. In Bloomington, Indiana—located about 200 miles southeast of the Illinois incident—police officers reported hearing gunfire near the Indiana University campus, where both Halloween and homecoming celebrations were underway.

According to a police statement, several individuals in the city’s downtown area sustained gunshot wounds. Seven people were transported to hospitals. Police apprehended one individual who was fleeing the scene while carrying a firearm; however, it has not yet been confirmed whether this person was the shooter.

Additionally, six people were wounded in a shooting near the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware. In Fayetteville, Arkansas, six more individuals were hospitalized following a shooting; preliminary police assessments suggest the incident stemmed from a dispute.

Experts: Preventing such violence is difficult

While the potential for violence surrounding Halloween celebrations is a known concern, experts on gun violence argue that it is extremely difficult for police to prevent such incidents entirely.

Alexis Piquero, a criminologist at the University of Miami who served as the director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics within the U.S. Department of Justice during the administration of former President Joe Biden, weighed in on the issue.

He told The New York Times that it is impossible for police to maintain a presence at every bar or parking lot. Consequently, when acts of violence occur simultaneously across various locations during a celebration, controlling the situation becomes a significant challenge for law enforcement.
