In a joint statement, 22 countries—including the United States and various European nations—have warned Iran to cease attacks carried out on their territories.
The statement, issued on Thursday, reads: “Attempts to kill, kidnap, harass, intimidate, or otherwise attack people on our soil undermine national sovereignty and international norms. These activities must stop immediately.”
It further states that the intelligence arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its overseas operations wing, the Quds Force, are involved in “lethal plots and harmful activities” targeting Iranian dissidents, journalists, and Jewish and Israeli communities and their interests.
The nations declared, “We are united in our resolve to protect our countries and people against these threats. Iran must immediately cease these activities.”
The signatory nations also alleged that Iran is behind a campaign of attacks targeting Jewish communities as well as Iranian and American journalists across Europe. A group linked to Iran, Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, has claimed responsibility for these attacks.
In August of last year, Australia expelled Iran’s ambassador. Australia accused Tehran of ordering at least two antisemitic attacks. Canberra recalled its own ambassador from Iran and temporarily suspended operations at the Australian embassy in Tehran.
Last November, Australia designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps as a “state sponsor of terrorism.” The countries that signed the joint statement are—Albania, Australia, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, and the United States.
