US Vice President JD Vance and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Keane have expressed concerns regarding a potential war with Iran. They conveyed their apprehensions to US President Donald Trump. They issued this warning during a high-level meeting at the White House on Friday, just as Trump was considering various ways to intensify attacks.
During the meeting, General Keane specifically drew Trump’s attention to the shortage or depletion of ammunition and missiles essential for the US military. Immediately following this meeting, the US temporarily suspended the attacks that had been ongoing for nearly two weeks. CNN reported this development.
Keane stated that the US military is capable of successfully executing any action ordered by the President. However, he noted that if the conflict were to be prolonged and attacks intensified, it would negatively impact overall military capabilities. Following these concerns regarding dwindling stockpiles and the risk of the war spiraling out of control, no new attacks were launched against Iran on Friday night.
In a statement regarding this matter, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said that President Trump always prioritizes diplomatic solutions. However, if Iran continues terrorist activities targeting the Strait of Hormuz or US allies, all military options remain on the table. He added that after 13 consecutive days of devastating attacks and severe economic sanctions, Iran should come to the negotiating table and reach a settlement. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump mentioned that US officials are actively engaged in discussions with Iran.
He stated that Iran is gradually becoming more sincere about negotiations. However, he noted that if talks fail, the US retains the capacity to intensify attacks or continue them as before. Sources indicate that the US administration is still deliberating on whether to expand the scope of military strikes. Meanwhile, Gulf nations have urged the US to exercise restraint and avoid taking extreme measures. Even within Trump’s inner circle, there are questions and doubts about whether the desired outcome can be achieved solely through airstrikes without deploying ground troops; a ground invasion carries the risk of causing further catastrophe.
