The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Monday that its forces had, for the first time in a combat operation, used unmanned surface vessels (sea-drones) to strike an Iranian submarine and ship maintenance facility. Turkey’s state-run news agency, Anadolu, reported this information.

In a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), CENTCOM stated that US forces successfully struck an Iranian submarine and ship maintenance facility yesterday using multiple one-way, suicide-style unmanned surface vessels.

The post further noted that three ‘Corsair’ model unmanned surface vessels struck the Bandar Abbas naval base. This marked the first time US forces utilized sea-drones in a combat operation.

CENTCOM claimed that the attack crippled Iran’s capability to continue launching persistent attacks on commercial vessels. CENTCOM also shared video footage of the drone operation on social media.

This attack occurred amidst escalating military tensions between Washington and Tehran across the Gulf region, even as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions continue between the two nations.
