US President Donald Trump has stated that the United States could launch an attack on Iran as early as Sunday. However, he added that if Tehran wishes, it could reach a “big and wonderful” deal with Washington. Trump made these remarks on Saturday, amid reports that a new military operation against Iran is being considered, according to the Anadolu Agency.
When asked by journalists how far along plans for a potential attack had progressed, Trump replied, “We are thinking about it—perhaps as early as tomorrow.” He declined, however, to provide any specific details regarding the decision to launch an attack.
“Do you really think I’m going to tell you whether or not I’m going to attack?” the US President asked. According to Trump, Iran could still avoid a new military strike by reaching an agreement with the United States.
“They want to make a deal,” he said. “But the question is, will they actually abide by it?”
The US President asserted that the primary objective is to ensure that Iran can never develop nuclear weapons in the future. He further remarked that any previous US operation involving B-2 bombers would not have been sufficient to guarantee this outcome in the long term.
“I need to ensure this permanently,” Trump said. “That is the only reason I am doing this.”
Meanwhile, Trump also claimed that the volume of oil being transported through the Strait of Hormuz has increased compared to the period before the current tensions began, though he did not provide any specific statistics to support this.
The US President did not announce a final decision regarding the next steps against Iran; instead, he presented both a military operation and a diplomatic settlement as potential paths forward.
“Perhaps I will have to put an end to this, or perhaps they will reach a deal,” Trump said. “But I am not certain.” ‘In any case, victory will be ours.’
The anti-Iran conflict involving the United States and Israel, which began last February, has triggered a wider confrontation across the Middle East. Although agreements have been reached regarding a ceasefire and the finalization of a peace treaty, a lasting solution to the crisis has yet to be found.
