US President Donald Trump has signed a bill imposing 100 percent tariffs on several countries, including India. The new bill also mandates a 500 percent tariff on Russia. Previously, the bill titled the “Lindsey-Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026” was passed by the US Congress; it has now become law following Trump’s signature.

According to an NDTV report, Trump signed the bill regarding sanctions on Russia into law. This paves the way for imposing tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries purchasing oil and gas from Russia, potentially placing India and China under pressure.

An Anandabazar report states that, alongside steep tariffs and multiple restrictions on Russia, the law also targets Russia’s partner nations. Trump is authorized to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries that purchase oil from Russia. The bill passed in the US House of Representatives—the lower house of Congress—with a vote of 262 to 159.
A 500 percent tariff will apply to any product imported into the US from Russia. Furthermore, the law mandates the imposition of restrictions on Russian President Vladimir Putin and top officials of his government.

This new US law could create difficulties for countries such as China, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Singapore, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Hungary, and Slovakia, in addition to India. These nations engage in commercial transactions—particularly oil trade—with Russia. A Democratic member of the US Congress had proposed an amendment specifically listing these countries for potential tariffs or restrictions, though that proposal was not adopted in the final version.
