US President Donald Trump wants to rename the Strait of Hormuz, proposing to call it the ‘Trump Strait.’ He made this proposal amidst ongoing tensions and disputes regarding this vital waterway during the conflict involving Iran. NDTV reported this news. Trump wrote on his Truth Social network: “Now that it is under US control, should we rename the Strait of Hormuz to the ‘Trump Strait’??? Like America, it too will be ‘hotter’ than before!”
This is the latest geographical name change proposed by Donald Trump.
A week prior, amidst a trade war with Canada, he had directed that Lake Ontario be renamed ‘Lake America.’ Major search engines even adopted the idea, labeling ‘Lake Ontario’ as ‘Lake America’ on their maps. On his first day in office for his second term in January 2025, Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America.’ Many such renaming initiatives began with the 80-year-old US President making seemingly humorous remarks, which he later took steps to implement in reality.
In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly threatened to assert US sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. He even released a map depicting the waterway as ‘new US territory.’ However, Iran has effectively shut down this crucial waterway—through which approximately one-fifth of the global oil supply passes—in retaliation for the conflict Trump initiated with Israel in late February. Oil prices are rising again after US forces launched a fresh attack near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. Trump claims Iran was attempting to lay new mines in the waterway, prompting the US military response.
