US President Donald Trump has claimed that the conflict with Iran will end immediately after the upcoming US midterm elections. On Wednesday, he stated that while Tehran is attempting to influence the US elections, it will not be able to withstand US economic pressure for much longer. Reuters reported this news.
Speaking to reporters before attending a Republican National Convention event in Dallas, Texas, Trump said the conflict would end right after the election because Iran can no longer sustain itself. He noted that they are desperate to influence the US election at any cost. Targeting Iran, Trump remarked that they want “nice and weak people” to come to power through the election so they can continue their nuclear program. There are currently no signs of a resolution to the conflict, which has been ongoing for seven months. On Wednesday, Iran announced that it had attacked ten ships after the US sank five Iranian oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz. Amidst this renewed conflict, oil prices are surging, with the price of Brent crude exceeding $100 per barrel for the first time since July.
Trump’s popularity rating has recently hit a record low due to voter frustration over the Iran conflict and the rising cost of living. The midterm elections, scheduled for November 3, are generally viewed as a public referendum on the performance of the current White House administration.
Trump added that oil prices would drop immediately after the election once the conflict concludes. While he did not entirely rule out the possibility of diplomatic talks, he indicated that it is not currently a priority. “Yes, talks could happen, but that is not where our focus lies,” he said.
