Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Monday (August 24). The meeting focused on the growing partnership between the two nations and the further expansion of cooperation in key sectors such as trade, energy, and fertilizers. This was reported by Firstpost.
According to the report, Jaishankar began the meeting by conveying greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Putin. He also handed over a personal message from Modi to the Russian President.
Welcoming Jaishankar to Moscow, Putin remarked that the visit highlights the depth and strength of the decades-long relationship between India and Russia. Quoting Putin, the Russian news outlet Sputnik reported: “Mr. Minister, I am very pleased to see you. Your visit today underscores the magnitude of the relationship that has developed between India and Russia over several decades.”
He noted that the two countries maintain regular cooperation across various sectors, including government, parliament, and the economy. Putin further mentioned that bilateral trade between India and Russia continues to grow, noting that cooperation is expanding in almost all areas.
Additionally, Jaishankar stated that the meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission had already taken place, where various aspects of bilateral cooperation were assessed positively.
Jaishankar said, “Overall, I believe our economic cooperation has grown very significantly.” He also expressed India’s interest in further expanding cooperation in these areas.
During the meeting, Jaishankar also discussed future engagements involving Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He conveyed that Modi looks forward to meeting Putin at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. He also expressed interest in welcoming the Russian President to the BRICS summit scheduled to be held in India.
