Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) dominance in Ligue 1 continues unabated. They have secured the league title for the fifth consecutive time. PSG achieved this feat on Wednesday night with a 2-0 victory over Lens. Luis Enrique’s squad currently sits atop the table with 76 points from 33 matches. Lens holds second place with 67 points from the same number of games. Both teams have one match remaining to play. Even if Lens wins their final match, it will be impossible to bridge the 9-point gap. PSG now holds the record for the most Ligue 1 titles won in history; by winning the championship this season, Luis Enrique’s team has raised that record even higher. This marks PSG’s 14th league title. Enrique has also set a new personal milestone as a coach; this is his third league title since taking charge of PSG in 2023.
Of the 14 league titles won by PSG, 12 have been secured within the last 14 years. The club—based at the Parc des Princes—has enjoyed this era of success since coming under the ownership of Qatari billionaire Nasser Al-Khelaifi. Lyon previously held the record for consecutive titles, winning the league seven times in a row between 2002 and 2008; with five consecutive titles, PSG now ranks second on that list. PSG stands on the brink of yet another record: having already won the French Super Cup and the Ligue 1 title, the club now has the opportunity to complete a historic “Treble.” On May 30th, Enrique’s team will face Arsenal in the Champions League final in Budapest. This season, PSG has also claimed victories in the French FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
PSG had already paved the way for their title victory by defeating Brest 1-0 in an earlier match. The French giants knew that simply securing a point against Lens—their closest rival in the title race—would be enough to clinch the championship. With this straightforward equation in mind, PSG took the field at Lens’ home ground; in the 29th minute, winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored to give PSG the lead. In the 93rd minute, Senegalese forward Ibrahim Mbaye scored the second goal. Speaking to beIN Sports after the victory, PSG star Ousmane Dembélé said, “We came here to win. However, our primary objective is to prepare ourselves for the final on May 30th. We have another match coming up this Sunday (against Paris FC). We will celebrate this title because we are now officially the champions.”
Inter’s ‘Double’ Title
On Wednesday night in Rome, Inter Milan clinched the Italian Cup by defeating Lazio 2-0. Inter took the lead in the 14th minute courtesy of an own goal by Lazio right-back Adam Marušić. In the 35th minute, Argentine striker Lautaro Martínez scored Inter’s second goal. Prior to this, Inter had already secured their 21st league title. This marks the first time since 2010 that they have won both the Italian Cup and the league title in a single season. Under the management of José Mourinho in 2010, Inter Milan had won the Champions League, Serie A, and the Italian Cup. Following the victory, Inter coach Cristian Chivu remarked, “We deserved these trophies after a magnificent season. Winning both the League and the Cup—winning two titles simultaneously—is no easy feat. We are absolutely delighted.”
