Peru has announced the severance of diplomatic ties with Iran amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The Peruvian Foreign Ministry announced this decision on Tuesday. In a statement, the ministry said that the Peruvian government strongly condemns Iran’s actions for inciting violence and escalating the conflict in the Middle East.
The statement further noted that the Peruvian government is deeply concerned about the harsh restrictions imposed by the Iranian government and the disruption of international trade through the Strait of Hormuz. The Foreign Ministry stated that Iran was informed of this decision via a diplomatic note sent to the Iranian Embassy in Ecuador. Diplomatic relations between Peru and Iran had existed since November 1973.
