SBU Headquarters

Russian forces have launched an attack on the headquarters of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) in the heart of the capital, Kyiv. A Russian drone struck the building directly during the attack on Friday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the incident.

A CNN report notes that this direct strike on one of Ukraine’s key government facilities comes amidst a wave of near-continuous air attacks by Russia on Kyiv over the past few days.
Ukrainian authorities reported that five people were injured in this latest Russian attack. Emergency rescue teams are currently working at the scene.

Russian forces have been carrying out successive attacks on Kyiv for the past eight days. These strikes have damaged multiple buildings in the city center and targeted warehouses and factories on the outskirts, including a Coca-Cola manufacturing plant.

Since the onset of Russia’s almost relentless attacks last month, at least 53 people have been killed and 134 injured in Kyiv city and the surrounding region.

However, the attack on the SBU headquarters is viewed as a significant escalation. It also suggests that Ukraine’s air defense systems are increasingly struggling to protect critical infrastructure from Russian strikes. A shortage of interceptor missiles—essential for countering Russian missiles and drones—has further complicated the situation.

The SBU headquarters is located in the very center of historic Kyiv. Directly opposite the building stands Saint Sophia Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Two other major historical landmarks—the Golden Gate and the National Opera—are also nearby.

Consequently, the direct Russian drone strike on the SBU headquarters in the heart of this historic and culturally significant area has sparked renewed concern regarding the security situation in the capital.
