UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, has reported that more than 17,000 children in Nepal are in need of emergency humanitarian assistance following devastating flash floods. This was reported by the BBC.
Alice Akunga, UNICEF’s Representative in Nepal, stated that children in the affected areas saw “their lives washed away before their eyes.” She also noted that many children have lost their lives and their loved ones.
“Children who survived the floods now face a heightened risk of disease, malnutrition, violence, and exploitation,” she said.
Akunga stated that UNICEF is providing assistance on the ground; however, the organization urgently requires more resources to reach every child in need.
UNICEF has appealed for $17.2 million (approximately £12.6 million) in aid to continue initial emergency relief and support operations until the full extent of the disaster’s damage can be assessed.
The organization also warned that without the necessary funding, its services for women and children would be severely curtailed.
