A major milestone is set to be achieved in India’s technology sector. US tech giant Meta (Facebook’s parent company) and Reliance Industries, led by India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, have announced a joint partnership to establish India’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered data center. Reliance Industries will construct a massive data center with a capacity of 168 megawatts in Jamnagar, Gujarat, in western India. Meta will lease the facility under a long-term agreement. The data center will be powered entirely by renewable energy, and desalinated seawater will be used for its cooling system.
For this project, Meta has also signed agreements to invest in approximately 1 gigawatt of new solar and wind power projects in India. Construction of this state-of-the-art data center is expected to be completed within the next two years.
Meta’s Big Bet on the Indian Market: Meta has stated that India’s vast user base and rapidly growing digital economy make it the ideal location for such a significant investment. According to market research by the IMARC Group, the size of India’s data center market is projected to double to $13.11 billion by 2034, driven by the rising demand for cloud computing and AI. Beyond Meta, global tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and OpenAI are also competing to build data centers and AI infrastructure worth billions of dollars in the Indian market. Through this deal, Reliance’s Jamnagar is poised to emerge as a major global technology hub.
