Mayor Zohran Mamdani has pledged to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit New York this coming September for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session.
At a press conference on Monday, he stated that his administration would treat the warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) with the utmost seriousness.
“This Israeli Prime Minister is the principal architect of the genocide being perpetrated in Gaza, Palestine,” Mamdani said at the briefing. “There is an arrest warrant against him for crimes against humanity and war crimes.”
The US administration and Israel have reacted strongly to the New York mayor’s remarks. A statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office read, “The ICC is an illegitimate court and holds no jurisdiction over Americans or Israelis. The warrant they issued against Prime Minister Netanyahu is completely baseless.”
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, that Netanyahu would under no circumstances be arrested while in the United States. However, Trump did not explicitly mention Zohran Mamdani by name in his post.
