Funeral proceedings for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei – who was killed in an attack by the United States and Israel—will begin on July 4 in the capital, Tehran. He will subsequently be buried on July 9 in his birthplace, Mashhad. These details were reported by Iranian state media.

Khamenei’s burial was originally scheduled for March but was postponed due to the protracted war with the United States and Israel.

According to the new schedule, three days of funeral ceremonies will take place in Tehran starting July 4. Another ceremony will follow on July 7 in the holy city of Qom.

The 86-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed last February in a joint US-Israeli attack on his residence.

Khamenei assumed leadership of Iran following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989. Khomeini had led the Islamic Revolution in Iran a decade earlier.

Khomeini was the ideological architect of the revolution that brought down the Pahlavi monarchy in Iran, whereas Khamenei was primarily responsible for building the country’s military and paramilitary structures.

His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, took over as his successor. However, he has remained out of the public eye since the war with the United States and Israel began.

Negotiations between the two nations have been ongoing since the ceasefire on April 8. Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Mojtaba Khamenei appears to be playing a significant role in these discussions.
