Amidst ongoing tensions in the Middle East, US President Donald Trump has expressed a preference for a diplomatic solution over a military conflict with Iran. He stated, “I want to make a deal. I’m not looking to kill people.”
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump mentioned that talks with Iran, facilitated by intermediaries, are scheduled to begin on Monday. He noted that the path of dialogue is more effective than war and would help avoid unnecessary loss of life.
Refusing to set a specific deadline for negotiations with Iran, Trump said, “Let’s see what happens. We are ready to take action whenever we want. But I want to make a deal. I don’t want to kill people, because it costs many lives, and we don’t want that.”
Trump claimed that the US was prepared for a major military operation. In his words, it could have been one of the largest attacks since World War II, bringing devastating consequences for Iran. However, the operation was temporarily halted after Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and Iran indicated a possibility for dialogue.
He further added that the full opening of the Strait of Hormuz and progress regarding Iran’s nuclear program are key priorities in any potential agreement.
Although Trump made it clear that the US is ready to take military action if necessary, a diplomatic solution remains his first choice. In his view, war inevitably leads to massive loss of life, and avoiding it is the best course of action.
Meanwhile, the White House’s ‘Rapid Response’ account released a video of Trump’s remarks, specifically highlighting his statement: “I want to make a deal; I don’t want to kill people.” The post also noted the initiation of talks and the decision to suspend the potential military operation, reflecting the Trump administration’s policy of prioritizing dialogue while maintaining a strong stance.
It is worth noting that diplomatic efforts, mediated by Gulf nations, are ongoing to ensure the normal flow of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and to reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program. However, statements from Iranian officials have shown varying perspectives regarding the progress of a potential deal.
