Curaçao had already etched its name in history simply by qualifying for the World Cup. Now, the tiny island nation—with a population of just 150,000—has made history again by displaying dominance on the pitch. Curaçao secured a point in their debut World Cup campaign. The architect of this historic feat was Eloy Room, who stood like a wall against Ecuador with his gloves on. The 37-year-old footballer made a record-equalling 15 saves. This ties the record for the most saves in a 90-minute World Cup match; American goalkeeper Tim Howard also made 15 saves against Belgium in the 2014 World Cup, though that match went into extra time. Thanks largely to Room’s heroics, Curaçao held Ecuador to a goalless draw in Kansas City.

An emotional Room said after the match, “When I think about where we came from, this achievement feels incredible. We’ve shown that we have the ability to fight even in tough situations. I had to make a lot of saves. I later heard that this is a long-standing record. I am proud to be part of such an achievement. We had chances to score, too, so there is a bit of regret. But this result feels like a victory to us. I will remember this match even 40 years from now; it will remain one of the best memories of my life. I think I deserve a statue in Curaçao now.” The story of how Netherlands-born Room came to wear the Curaçao jersey is no less dramatic. Although he had the opportunity to play for Dutch age-group teams during the 2014-15 season, he never received a call-up to the senior squad. Then, out of the blue, Curaçao’s coach at the time—Dutch legend Patrick Kluivert—called to invite him to join the team. That single phone call changed the trajectory of Curaçaoan football. Following in Room’s footsteps, many other footballers of Dutch descent subsequently came to play for Curaçao.

The current 26-man World Cup squad includes 25 players of Dutch descent—a trend that began with Room. Room’s international career holds yet another special moment. Three years ago, Lionel Messi reached the milestone of 100 international goals by scoring a hat-trick against Curaçao. Room was the goalkeeper for Curaçao that day. After the match, Messi himself approached Room to swap jerseys and praised some of his brilliant saves. Before the game against Ecuador, Room was not a well-known figure in world football; towards the end of the qualifiers, he did not even have a club. He had become effectively unemployed following the financial crisis at the Dutch club Vitesse and a brief stint with the Belgian side Cercle Brugge. Yet, he did not give up. He continued training under a personal trainer and a dedicated goalkeeping coach, and regularly played padel to maintain his fitness. The scene in the dressing room after the match was also memorable. Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima rushed straight to Kansas City after watching a Netherlands match in Houston. Amidst the celebrations, Room jokingly remarked that Curaçao owed him a statue. Before the match, Room had only 100,000 Instagram followers; by the end, that number had surpassed 800,000.

Curaçao, with a population of just 150,000, gained FIFA membership in 2011. This marks the first time the team has secured a spot in the World Cup. Previously, another island nation, Cape Verde, had also earned their first point by drawing against Spain—a match where a goalkeeper was the hero. This draw has also altered the dynamics of the group stage. Germany tops Group E with 6 points from two matches, with the four-time champions securing a knockout spot after twelve years. Ivory Coast holds second place, while Curaçao is dreaming of advancing to the Round of 32 from the third spot.
