An explosion has occurred at a military facility in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province, killing at least 11 people. Syrian authorities confirmed the incident on Saturday.
The country’s state news agency, SANA, reported that the Ministry of Defence organized funeral prayers and burials for the “11 martyrs killed in an explosion at a Syrian Arab Army facility” in Deir ez-Zor province.
Earlier on Friday, the Syrian Ministry of Defence had announced the explosion at the army facility in Deir ez-Zor, though the cause was still under investigation at the time.
State media reports indicated that firefighting units and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene following the explosion, although the casualty figures were not immediately disclosed.
Several explosions at weapons depots have occurred in Syria in the past. The country is currently attempting to recover after more than a decade of civil war.
A new situation has emerged in the country following the ousting of long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad in late 2024.
Earlier this month, 14 people were killed in an explosion at an arms depot in northwestern Syria. Prior to that, at least five people died when a vehicle loaded with ammunition exploded in the same region.
