Portugal failed to hold onto the early lead established by João Neves in their World Cup opener. Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates were forced to share the points in a 1-1 draw against DR Congo—nicknamed the ‘Leopards’—who displayed a fighting spirit and a well-organized defense. With this draw, DR Congo is celebrating the achievement of their first-ever World Cup point in 52 years.
The Portuguese side played attacking football right from the start. In just the sixth minute, João Neves put Portugal ahead with a precise header, connecting with a brilliant cross from Pedro Neto on the left flank that outwitted five Congolese defenders. Undeterred by falling behind, DR Congo launched several dangerous counter-attacks. In the 18th minute, Aaron Wan-Bissaka made a crucial sliding tackle to deny Nuno Mendes a certain goal following a pass from Bruno Fernandes.
DR Congo made history in the final minute of first-half stoppage time (45+5 minutes). Yoane Wissa beat Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa with a magnificent header, connecting with a ball floated in from a short corner taken by Arthur Masuaku. This marked DR Congo’s first-ever goal in the World Cup.
In the second half, Portugal brought on Francisco Conceição and Rafael Leão in place of Bernardo Silva but failed to break down DR Congo’s defense. A goal by João Cancelo in the 55th minute was disallowed due to offside. Ultimately, despite dominating possession with 75% of the ball, Portugal was thwarted by the Congolese defense and left the pitch with a disappointing 1-1 draw.
