Opposition MP Gilad Kariv has called for the removal of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from office.
He asserts that removing Netanyahu is essential for the survival of the State of Israel.
Kariv made these remarks in a post on the social media platform X on Saturday. He criticized Netanyahu’s stance regarding the Israeli military’s investigation into the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023.
Kariv alleges that in the months following the October 7 attack, Netanyahu avoided visiting the kibbutzim surrounding Gaza. Similarly, he has been evading the issue of the Israeli military’s investigation into the events of that day.
The opposition MP further stated that Netanyahu has repeatedly “neglected” Israel’s security and demonstrated “complete incompetence” in managing national security.
“A person like this should not be given the opportunity to make decisions regarding our future and the future of our children,” Kariv said.
In his view, removing Netanyahu from the premiership is now an “existential necessity” for Israeli society.
Dispute Over a State Inquiry
There have been calls to establish a state commission of inquiry to examine the failures of Israel’s security apparatus before and after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Alongside opposition parties, a significant portion of the general public has also been demanding this.
However, Netanyahu’s government has rejected the demand for a state commission of inquiry. Instead, it has favored an inquiry panel appointed by the government itself.
Pressure Ahead of Elections
Parliamentary elections in Israel are scheduled for October 27. Opinion polls indicate a decline in the popularity of Netanyahu and his Likud party.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu is facing trial on corruption charges. Additionally, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant against him over allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
All in all, political pressure on Netanyahu is mounting from multiple directions—including the investigation into the October 7 attack, allegations of security failures, the upcoming election, and ongoing legal proceedings.
