A woman stabbed two people in Times Square, New York, on Monday. Police subsequently shot the woman.

Local media reports state that the suspect has been taken to the hospital in critical condition. There is no immediate information regarding the condition of the two stabbing victims.

Police do not currently believe the stabbing incident is linked to terrorism. The woman’s mental health is also being investigated.

An AFP journalist at the scene reported that numerous emergency responders arrived at Times Square following the attack. Officers were also seen examining bloodstains at the location.

An eyewitness told local media outlet PIX11 that the suspect was holding two knives. Police initially attempted to subdue her using a Taser, but she lunged at the officers.

The eyewitness, who requested anonymity, added, “The police shot her twice.”

The New York Police Department confirmed the shooting and stated that a press conference regarding the incident would be held later.

A police spokesperson told AFP that an investigation into the matter is underway.
