Nancy Kissinger, wife of former US Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, has passed away. She stood by her husband, Henry Kissinger, for nearly half a century amidst his busy life in international diplomacy. She died at her home in South Kent, Connecticut, on Thursday (local US time). She was 92 years old.
Her family announced the news of her death.
Henry Kissinger passed away on November 29, 2023, at the age of 100. He is regarded as a symbol of post-World War II US diplomacy.
Politically astute and knowledgeable about global affairs, Nancy Kissinger was deeply committed to safeguarding her husband’s reputation. Following their marriage in 1974, she accompanied Henry Kissinger on numerous diplomatic trips across the globe.
Even after Henry Kissinger left office in 1977, the couple remained among Washington’s most prominent figures. They were frequently seen at state dinners, embassy events, and Republican receptions at the White House.
The Kissingers were also well-known in New York City, which served as their primary residence. There, they participated in museum openings, fashion shows by Bill Blass (American fashion designer) and Oscar de la Renta (Dominican-American fashion designer), and various charity fundraising events.
From the early 1980s, the couple began to scale back their social engagements to enjoy a more retired lifestyle. They owned a 300-acre estate in South Kent, where they spent their summers and weekends.
Shortly after their marriage, a friend told The New York Times, “To those who know her well, Mrs. Kissinger is an intelligent, capable, and sincere woman. She possesses great charm and a good sense of humor. She is uncompromising when it comes to integrity.”
This is not to say that Nancy Kissinger’s glamorous life was entirely free of complications. Part of this is linked to her husband’s controversial image.
While serving as Secretary of State under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald R. Ford from 1973 to 1977, Henry Kissinger played a pioneering role in adopting a policy of easing tensions with the Soviet Union. He also spearheaded initiatives to establish relations with China. To bring an end to the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, Kissinger engaged in intensive “shuttle diplomacy” across the Middle East.
Kissinger also played a crucial role in the negotiations for the Paris Peace Accords, which brought an end to U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. For this achievement, he was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize alongside Vietnamese diplomat Le Duc Tho.
