Trump orders reduction in joint military exercises with South Korea

US President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to significantly scale back pre-planned joint military exercises with South Korea, a long-standing Asian ally. He issued this directive citing the excessive costs of the drills, Seoul’s refusal to take action against Iran, and his own excellent relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. News agency Reuters reported this development.

Just hours before the start of the annual ‘Ulchi Freedom Shield’ exercise, Trump stated on the social media platform Truth Social that he was far from pleased with the decision to participate in such costly drills. He argued that these exercises send an “inappropriate and hostile” message to North Korea, noting that Pyongyang has posed no threat during his tenure. Furthermore, he pointed out that although the South Korean president was urged to join Washington’s campaign to denuclearize Iran, Seoul flatly refused. Meanwhile, the South Korean military confirmed that their regular exercises, involving approximately 18,000 troops, commenced on Monday as scheduled.

Neither Seoul’s presidential office nor its defense ministry offered an immediate reaction to Trump’s comments. Analysts suggest that Trump is taking steps to increase military distance from an ally in an effort to loosen ties between Russia and North Korea and create new diplomatic opportunities with Pyongyang.
