A Ukrainian drone has struck a crowded beach in southern Russia, killing seven people—including three children—and injuring 40 others. Russian local authorities confirmed the incident.
The BBC has verified videos of the attack circulating on social media. The footage shows a drone speeding toward a steep cliff before crashing onto the beach below like a fireball, an event witnessed by locals.
The incident occurred at a beach near the village of Arkhipo-Osipovka on the Black Sea coast. Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of Russia’s Krasnodar region, stated that the number of injured has reached 40, with 17 of them hospitalized.
Kondratyev accused Ukraine—which is currently at war with Russia—of deliberately and consistently targeting civilians. Ukraine has not commented on the matter; however, both Russia and Ukraine have consistently denied allegations of targeting civilians.
It remains unconfirmed whether the Russian beach was the drone’s intended target. Some Ukrainian channels on the messaging app Telegram claimed that the drone crashed on the beach after its signal was jammed due to electronic warfare.
Citing eyewitnesses, some Russian media outlets reported hearing gunfire before the drone crashed. It is suspected that Russian air defense systems attempted to shoot down the drone before impact.
This Black Sea beach is a popular destination for Russians, attracting many for vacations thanks to its warm climate, long coastline, and well-developed tourism infrastructure. The beach sees even larger crowds due to international travel restrictions limiting Russians’ ability to travel abroad.
For about a year, Ukraine has been successfully carrying out long-range strikes deep within Russian territory. Most of the attacks have targeted Russia’s energy infrastructure and commercial warehouses. Ukraine claims that Russia uses these facilities for military purposes.
However, there have been several reports of civilian casualties resulting from these Ukrainian attacks. Just last weekend, eight people were killed in attacks on various Russian cities.
