The taste of world glory returned after 16 years. Just as the Spaniards were celebrating their title win with unbridled joy, the eyes of millions of football fans worldwide were drawn to a bizarre scene in the corner of the stage. US President Donald Trump suddenly became the center of attention, overshadowing the epic moment of Spain’s historic World Cup victory.

He refused to leave the podium after the trophy presentation. Even a last-minute attempt by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to physically pull Trump away proved unsuccessful. The sight of him standing there for an extended period amidst the players’ celebrations went viral on social media instantly.

Spain secured a thrilling 1-0 victory in extra time at MetLife Stadium. Shattering Argentina’s dreams, ‘La Roja’ lifted their second World Cup title. However, the post-match awards ceremony seemed to steal the spotlight entirely.

The US President had entered the pitch alongside FIFA chief Gianni Infantino to present the trophy at New York’s MetLife Stadium. As the head of state of a co-hosting nation, both Trump and Infantino were met with loud boos from the crowd right from the start. Yet, the drama that unfolded after the trophy presentation was even more intense than the atmosphere on the pitch.

When Spain captain Rodri and his teammates were preparing for the traditional trophy lift, Trump remained planted right in front of the cameras instead of stepping aside. At one point, Infantino rushed over to ask him to leave the stage, but Trump completely ignored the request.

Instead, the US President began performing his signature dance moves right there; Infantino tried to manage the awkward situation with a forced smile. Trump had previously set a similar precedent by refusing to leave the stage after Chelsea’s Club World Cup victory last year.

Football fans are quite irked by this political circus and erratic behavior from Trump following his re-election. Although he made history by becoming the first sitting US president to attend a World Cup final held on American soil, analysts believe that his “photo-op intrusion” somewhat dampened Spain’s golden moment.

Trump’s unexpected and bizarre stunt is now generating as much global discussion as the match-winning goal by Ferran Torres or the heartbreaking tears of Lionel Messi.
