Pop music legend Madonna has made history by once again reaching the top of the US album charts with her new album, Confessions OO. With this achievement, she has set a new milestone as the first female artist to secure a number-one album in the US across five different decades (the 1980s, 2000s, 2010s, 2020s, and spanning five decades of her overall career). The 67-year-old “Queen of Pop” continues to prove that her popularity remains undiminished; she has topped the Billboard 200 album chart in the 1980s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s.
Although several of her albums reached the number-two spot in the US during the 1990s—and topped charts in various other countries—she did not manage to hit number one in her home country during that decade. Her new album, Confessions OO, has now achieved tremendous success in both the US and the UK. Critics consider it one of Madonna’s best works in recent years. Last Friday, the album also hit number one on the UK charts, thereby maintaining her record of achieving number-one albums across five decades in the UK as well. This marks Madonna’s tenth number-one album in the US and her thirteenth in the UK. The new album has also earned her the record for the highest album sales in the UK over the past 14 years.
Making History
With this success, Madonna becomes the fourth artist in history to achieve at least ten number-one hits on both the Billboard 200 album chart and the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. She joins a list that previously included Taylor Swift, The Beatles, and Drake. Released on July 3rd, Confessions OO is a follow-up to Madonna’s massively successful 2005 album, Confessions on a Dance Floor. As with the previous album, she collaborated with British producer Stuart Price on this project. Stuart has previously worked with artists such as Kylie Minogue, Dua Lipa, and Take That.
Record on TikTok
Madonna is known for reinventing herself over time. She began her journey in 1982 with the song “Everybody.” To mark the release of her new album, she participated in a live Q&A session on TikTok. That live event on July 2nd drew 2.1 million viewers worldwide, setting a record as the most-watched live event by a solo artist in the platform’s history. The album’s release also gave Madonna the biggest streaming week of her career. Additionally, it marked her highest vinyl sales since tracking began in 1991.
Madonna Might Appear at Glastonbury
During a recent conversation with host Graham Norton on a special BBC program, Madonna hinted that she might perform at the Glastonbury Festival for the first time next summer. She said, “I think I’ll do a promotional tour for a while. Then, in the summer, I’ll do something bigger.” When Graham Norton asked if that “something big” would take place in the UK, Madonna replied with a smile, “It could be. But do you have to know everything?” Notably, discussions had taken place between Madonna and the organizers in 2023 regarding her headlining the 2024 Glastonbury Festival, but those talks ultimately did not succeed.
